Did he go by John or William do you know, because in England it appears to be William John? And do you have any time frame whatsoever for his marriage to Maria? Maybe his granddaughter will have some approximate dates. It would help if we could find him on a census record. It could be him on the Ellis island site, and then he leaves Kentucky and moves down to Louisiana and meets Maria.

There's a John W. Maynard, age 82, listed in the Louisiana Death Index as having died 6 Jan. 1941 in Caddo Parish.  The age isn't a perfect match, but it might be a typo of some sort if it was off by a decade.  If he is the right guy, an obituary might shed some light on when he came over and/or how long he was living in the area.
