John and his two younger brothers were placed together in the workhouse sometime after their mother's death.

Yes, I have their marriage certificate where his occupation is shown as baker.

As I prefer to have social histories together with vital information, I thought perhaps there had been some
particular economic problems or changes that required him
to work as a gardener.

There is another possibility.

The census pages we view are a transcription of the schedule fill ed in by the householder, as with any transcription there is always a chance of error. The enumerator may have made a mistake when he entered the information, especially if the handwriting on the schedule was hard to read.

For sure, that is often the problem, and the reason for checking and rechecking information.

John and his family settled in Toronto where he was a baker until he became blinded in an accident.

My mother recalled that he was a kindly, gentle soul.
