Why are MOVED threads documented by ....
« on: Wednesday 30 July 08 14:09 BST (UK) »
.... a new thread just to confirm that a thread has moved from A to B.

The system is smart enough to keep track by its title and poster etc, so it seems redundant - and wastes resources - to post a new thread telling us nothing really.

plus its annoying that they clutter up the 'Unread Posts since last Visit'

Can they be eliminated ?

What I've always wondered about is why these messages are caused by some movements and others are done surruptiously without them!

For instance on the Sussex board when messages are completed and moved to the Completed board there has never been a message saying it has been moved, it just reappears in the new board.

Is it different mods with different operating systems or something??

might well be diferent Mods - but the site has the same features / functions / tools overall - maybe some have more 'priviledges' ...

you've reminded me that often one sees a note in Italics documenting that the post has been editted by a Mod - quite often, I've seen the original and cant see a change (other than perhaps grammar - never spelling)

whats that about then ?

dont think I approve of a post being changed without the change being documented ?

The MOVED notices are left automatically when we move a message unless the mod disables this function.  The purpose of them is to guide the poster to their moved message.  Remember not everyone has enabled notifications and so they will not get a notification message in their inbox with a forwarding url.

If I am only moving messages within the same county I tend not to leave them, but if I move something to a totally unconnected board, I will leave a message.  We can comment on the MOVED message if we wish.  I sometimes do to be informative.

They should really be deleted after 48 hrs but we are only human and we often forget! ;D

Arr that explains the difference with completed threads then rather than wrong place ones.   ;D  I guess once a message is completed its not often we go back to it and likely you only would if you have started the thread which you would probably go back to through your posts, or at least I do.  Thank you Rick I have wondered that for a while.  ::)

The purpose of them is to guide the poster to their moved message

I think you'll find that isnt necessary - happy to be corrected, but I think that anyone clicking on their thread will get the new URL .....
