Apologies, re Samuel. But he has left very little evidence. He was born Worcester, despite stating Liverpool on census.

Children on 81 census are in the workhouse. Elizabeth b 1850 Worcs also in the workhouse. No sign of Samuel. On 71 with wife Eliz and son Samuel.

As you say, Eliz on 91, 1901 married and then widowed. But I am not sure about the 91. Why was she in the workhouse on 3 census. She may have gone in and out, but where was Samuel???

All the info you have just given is correct. THey weren't born Liverpool, but Worcs

Also in Birkenhead Workhouse in 1881 - all Lawley

Albert aged 4
Mary 5
Roland 8
William David 9

Plus the ones mentioned in previous replies
Samuel 10
Gertrude 3
Olive 6 months

Any death for Samuel would seem to be from Olive's conception to 1901

But no sign of Samuel even on the 81.

Thanks for all your help and input.

You never know, He may even pop up on the 1911 :o   Such is his 'mystery'

You could always see if the Workhouse records are available for pre-1881 as there may be some clue as to how Elizabeth ended up spending + 20 years there

I have enquired about the workhouse records. They are moving premises so everything is boxed up. I will check on their progress though, just in case my email, although forwarded, may not get answered.

Thanks

Samuel Lawley, last seen on the 1871 census - Ref: RG10 Piece 3754 Folio 164 Page 75.

He disappears and I am wondering if any roots-chatters can shed any light on where he may be or where I can look. I have run out of ideas!

Thanks very much for reading.
