Africa: Tracing African Ancestor

I've found a ancestor in a census called Charles Stewart born 1787 in Africa working in Bath as a house servant.
Is there anyway to trace further back, where he came from?

To be brutally honest, there is very little chance that you can get any further without more information.

Africa is a huge area and the British visited, colonized or set up trading posts in many, many places.

If post all the details you have, maybe even on the Somerset board for Bath, someone may be able to dig out something more on him from parish records.
