Hi

Just found my copy of Blazon - but dated June 1996, so you probably have a more modern version that the one I have.

Will try to get it to cooperate, but not expecting miracles

Hi Bean

Well, I have had a play with 'Blazon'

Got my shield up, got it quartered in correct colours

Was surprised to find Griffin Sergent and Lion Passant amongst the Heraldic Beasts - but then came the problems.

Can not correctly put the fesse engrailed on the shield

What a bummer - thought I was doing really well up till then

Ah well, back to the drawing board

Hi everyone i have just noticed this page on Family crest after using another page to ask how to get it on my profile.I didnt manage it but today it appeared by magic. I got it off the net a few days ago I never knew there was one. I have now been reading a crest is different for each family and can only be used within that family in the house or for stationary. I thought the one i chose was for Jones England. Will i be in any trouble for using it ???Dont want to tread on any toes.

Hi Celia

Officially you are breaking the law - and you have read that it belongs to one person only, each time it moves down the generations, it changes slighty.

I do not think the Heraldic people will prosecute for illegal use - so many people are doing it nowdays.

It is OK to display it in your home, but under no circumstances must you use it on your stationary, etc - they would take action then

I think the keys words are 'this is a Coat of Arms associated with my surname' rather than 'this is my Coat of Arms'

So, just quitely display it, but never claim it is yours

Hi Celia,
I always suggest that if you use a Coat of Arms anywhere in connection with your research you just add  " this Coat of Arms,  was used  by a Jones family member" etc.
Sorry to be pedantic , but the Crest is the emblem that appears a top the helmet. (You can use that  on its own with no problems). Better still if we can establish who was granted the Coat of Arms you have, then you can say it was issued to them.
I will look through some sources I have and see if I can pin it down for you.
Best wishes
Grandad James. :)

Hi Celia,
The Crest that is on "your" Coat of Arms is very similar to a crest in Fairbairns that says it was used by Jones of Berks.

Perhaps if we ask Chris nicely he could scan it and post.
Plate 89 crest 10.

I dont yet know how to do that  ???

I have found several other Coats of Arms for Jones but not one that matches "yours" . But then none of these are connected to Berks.
Welcome to the Heraldic minefield.
Talking of mines.  ;)

There is an interesting one for  Sir Frederick John JONES ,
He was connected with the mining industry and made a baronet in 1919.
His crest is in simple terms "a gryphon holding a miners pickaxe".

regards Grandad James.
