Hello,

On the 1901 census :
RG13,Piece 3659,Folio 74,Page 1-for the DOW family,place of birth for Frederick Edgar Dow is given as, Sawlinton Lancs.

Have googled for the place name - it does not show any returns for this place name -Help !!.

The only thing I can think of is that the enumerator put what he (thought) he heard?

It may be: 'Soughton. Lancashire'?

enter the above (without the quotes) in Google & it comes up with loads of results!

Hi

I think it's just Swinton written with a very messy pen nib, and they've ended up with extra smudges.

The family are in Eccles so it wouldn't be surprising - not far away.

I just took a look at the Original Image & I think it is 'Swinton' (looks like the enumerator was in a rush and tried to overwrite it?).

Thanks Pegasuss - I have decided to go with Swinton as the place of birth for the moment - the more I look at the Image it seems(!) to look like Swinton.
