Lawrence Longside Cemetery
« on: Tuesday 05 August 08 19:57 BST (UK) »
I have a reference to a "fine memorial stone" erected to the memory of James Lawrence and his wife Janet Hay (latter died 17 Nov 1848) in Longside Parish Churchyard. Can anyone tell me if it's still there and possible transcribe and/or photograph it for me?

Hi Argee,

Sorry but there is no MI like the one you mention in the draft MI book at ANESFHS. That is not to say it isn't there as there appears to be a lot missing from the draft. Perhaps somone from near Mintlaw could look for you?

Certainly I would try and email
info[at]buchanweb.org  (replace [at] with @)
and ask if they know of a heritage/family history group in Longside.

There is also an email link at
www.longsideparish.freeserve.co.uk
which doesn't open on this computer, but it looks more promising if you ask the authors of this website.

Good luck,

Should the stone have disappeared totally, there is at the ANESFHS a microfilm showing Victorian transcriptions of the gravestones at Longside. Some were hardly legible then. The grave numbers in this transcription match those on the Council's currently used plan of the kirkyard.

There was a book published many years ago about a family of Lawrences in that area, perhaps nearer Rathen or Lonmay. I can't remember the title, but have notes taken from it somewhere.

Did anyone ever find the works of Archie Strath Maxwell?

I believe that Archie Strath Maxwell completed work on various Episcopalian congregations.  I am looking for the records for 'Chapel Yard of Newburgh' or 'Holyrood of Newburgh'.

I have the ANESFHS 'The Kirkyard of Foveran AA 149 but I think there may be different records.

The names I am looking for are Brown and Sutherland
Findlay - Fetteresso, Cookney, Kincardineshire
Allan - Foveran, Aberdeenshire
Wood - Aberdeen, Auchnagatt
Ferguson - Auchnagatt
Knight - Stonehaven
McIntyre - Mid Calder, Edinburgh

These books are available in libraries. If you're in Scotland you can request it through your local library.Failing that I'm sure Aberdeen City Library can do a look up for you:)
