Another possibility is that she is illegit, and father is made up ... ???

Where were they married? Any clues from marriage address (hers) (his) and witness names?  They married within a few months of the 1861 census, relating to address, she must be somewhere.

Sometimes all info helps...

Hi again Jen  :)

No addresses on marriage cert ?

These look like witness, perhaps if you try trace back see if you can find a connection, sometimes it helps..

1861 - RG9 Piece 3988 Folio 7 Page 10
Monmouth

Phillip & Sarah Smith, both age 60

Link of the church, looks like it is in the town of Overmonnow, but possibly would come under 'Monmouth'

Have you tried checking other parishes for possible BMD that may connect, possibly she was born, but did not
live in area?

BTW...How do you know she was named Mary Jane Powell?

Will check back later

Overmonnow is part of the town of Monmouth where it has a bridge over the river Monnow. It has a beautiful old Church (St Thomas), which I have visited recently. I was made most wecome, A person was transcripting at the time and I was shown the original marriage entry.
Her daughter Julia's Birth Cert states her mothers former name as Powell.
Still trying other areas [Hereford} etc. This is a record I found on 1861 Census
for Bedwellty
Thomas Jenkins Head b. 1834 Bedwellty Mon
Margret  Jenkins Wife  b. 1838          "          "
John Jenkins        Son  b.  1859         "          "
Mary A. Jenkins    Daur b.  1860         "          "
Jane C. Jenkins    Daur b.  1850          "         "

Jane      Powell   Sister b.   1836    Wales

Am I barking up the wrong Family Tree entirely?
jen.

I don't know what to suggest, Jen  :-\

It looks like she was never on census with Charles (carpenter)  possibly he died...think she is there somewhere but maybe under a different name on cenus...considering between us we cannot find her where she should be.  I have tried everything I know, first names only in birth area, last name, Jane with dad Charles all counties etc...only one I can find is a barber/hairdresser, within correct area.

I have a few like this, were the are no easy answers, sometimes we never get to know, other times, it is eureka!

Welcome anyway, hope you enjoy Rootschat, it is a great forum.

Sorry I could not help you more... :-\
