Have you tried to get a death certificate or an obituary for him?

I have been advised that getting a death certificate can be a long and tedious job.

On reflection my last message was rather abrupt. If you could advise me on how to go about getting a death certificate ie; Where from and what cost etc.

For that time frame, it looks like you would have to either contact the county where the death took place or see if there's microfilm available through the LDS Family History Center.  http://www.sos.ca.gov/archives/archives_faq.htm

For an obituary, I would try to contact the local library where he lived/died and see if they have anything available from them and if they can look it up for you.  If that doesn't pan out, you can check www.raogk.com for a look-up volunteer.

If you know where he is buried - the cemetery may have some information.

I guess this is where your info came from - so maybe Barbara McMahon may know where the information came from

or here

I have used my county archives for this information.
