Pre 1890 passenger lists
« on: Saturday 09 August 08 09:53 BST (UK) »
Hi
Not long ago I discovered a relative, Charles William Howell, who must have worked in South Africa in 1890 as according to the 1891 census his youngest son, Robert Allen Howell, son was born there.
We've now found his wife Annie Howell and 3 children, Charles, Lily and Annie on board the SS Anglian sailing from Southampton on 3rd Jan 1890 to Durban, Port Natal, South Africa. There is no sign of Charles, so I presume they were sailing out to join him.
Are there any passenger lists prior to 1890? He must have been in England up to 1887/8 as his children, including his youngest daughter Annie were born in London.
His wife and children returned home before the 1891 census as they appear in it staying with her parents. The whole family are back together in the 1901 census. Are there any passeger list which will show when they returned and when he came home?
Thanks
Janet

Hi there - try searching the genealogyworld.net site. You will have to search each passenger list but is worth it! Lists are by no means complete.

Hi Janet.
You could have a look at the site, it goes back to 1878.
