After visiting Hunts records last tuesday and looking at the habitual criminal register and photographing the said Samuel Read, I tend to agree that this isnt the Samuel Read, husband of Catherine and suspected father of Naomi, Mercy (my great grandmother) and Clara. The Samuel in the hab crim register was taken into custody by Hunts constab after his release from Maidstone Gaol after serving time for another offence down there. Bit of a scallywag, ...or a cry for help? I can find no record on the CALM in Kent about this Samuel Read.

Mercy, Naomi, Clara and Catherine were admitted into the workhouse many times, I have dates if anyone is interested, over quite a few years. The last time Mercy was admitted in 1888 (7th Jan) she was 19, listed as a servant and pregnant. On 30th April 1888 she gave birth (in the workhouse) to a daughter who she named Clara. The child died in the workhouse on Monday 21st May 1888 and Mercy discharged herself on June 9th 1888. That was the last time any of this family entered the Huntingdon workhouse.

I know this is slightly off thread but another fact about Catherine and Samuel and tribe...

15/2/1873. Inmate of Huntingdon workhouse stating she was
deserted by her husband on Jan 27th at Raunds, Thrapston Union
would not admit her and she was told to return to her own parish
with her three children,Mr Ashton is to take proceedings against
Samuel her husband. On 12/5/1877 a reward of £1 was offered for
info leading to the conviction of Samuel Read her husband.

I also have photographs of Marcy, Naomi and Clara I can email if anyone is interested.

Have you ever considered that Samuel may have shipped out to America in the early 1880s with eldest brother Benjamin and some of his family, if you look on the CLS website there are quite a few people with that name and YOB.

Benjamin ended up in Cache, Utah and is recorded in the 1900 US census, having said that where you would start looking for passenger lists from that time I really don't know, but I am sure somebody does.

Good luck

Sorry, but this samuel is a completely different one. Same family but not the elusive one.

She wasnt lost in 1881, living as cook in Alconbury Weston and listed on census as being married, but not living with the missing samuel. And yes, sorry, but same family (by marraige) with 2 samuels and 2 catherines.
