Parish Records for Hoddesdon
« on: Thursday 27 January 05 09:54 GMT (UK) »
My ggrandfather, John Hills, appears on censuses from 1861 onwards as having been born in Hoddesdon.   However, I can't find him there in the 1851 census.  He was living in Hertford when he married in 1853.

From the ages given on the censuses he would have been born between 1829 and 1831.   According to his marriage certificate his father's name was William.

If anyone has access to the Hoddesdon parish records I would be really grateful for a look-up.  Thanks

Hi Forest

I have checked the BVRI, but I cannot find a baptism for a John HILLS at Hoddesden I'm afraid.

Unless someone is going to HALS and is happy to look for you, or is currently going through the Hoddesden films you may struggle with this, as HALS only sells PR's on microfilm and not fiche, so consequently less people buy them.

HALS do operate a lookup service, and as you have a good idea of the birthdate, they may be able to check for you within the £5 for 30 minutes scheme.

Rick

Thanks for looking and for the advice.  He's proving to be a really elusive character but hopefully I'll trace his background one of these days.

I am looking for the baptism of Sarah Bosworth 1794 in Hoddesdon but none of the on-line services appear to have records from that parish before 1841.

Does anyone know where one may find a record of her baptism?
