Sisterjane has found her in the 1841 Kempston Census and I have her same location in 1861 & 1871 Census.

There's a burial in Kempston of John Maynard on 20 Nov 1848 which ties up with the GRO death entry. Problem is he's only 21 months!

But there is a burial at Kempston of John Minard age 47 on 11 Dec 1844

Just had a look at 1841 on the CDrom set, which is much clearer than Ancestry and it reads

HO107/6/14 folio 5B
Up End, Kempston

Jno 46 Bricklayer
Elizabeth 40
Joel 14 ag lab
Hester 9
Ann 3
Eliza Cook 11

All born Beds

But it's the surname that's difficult. Definitely not Maynard. Looks as though it could be Menners.

I don't think that's the right Elizabeth in 1851. It looks like 78 to me, and the name of the head looks like Garner. A Sarah Maynard married George Garner in Kempston in 1825.

Hi David and Wozzie,

Thanks again for your interest and help.

Until your I read your last posts, David I was thinking that the 1851 Census reference Wozzie posted squared with the 1861 and 1871 Censuses details for Elizabeth MAYNARD (Purser) I had seen. In these she was described as a widowed pauper lacemaker.

What is the birth place for her? 1861 and 1871 Census had Wootton, which is where Elizabeth Purser was born in 1799, and married John Maynard in 1821.

From FreeBMD I had seen 1848 and 1852 as 2 potential death dates for John Maynard, and I thought seeing the 1851 Census would clinch it!

As to the 1841 Census, that has confused things! 1841, daughter Hester, 1871 Esther...?

At least you guys have got things moving, I spent hours on Ancestry, trying to find these people in these 2 Censuses.

Kind regards, Michael.

The Elizabeth Maynard age 78 that Wozzle found in 1851 had birthplace Kempston, but as John found the same family in 1841 I think you can rule her out.

Hester/Esther just variations on the same name. Problem is I can't find either in 1851 - I thought she might be easier to trace than her mother, but apparently not.

The 1844 burial of John Minard age 47 fits pretty well with his birth.

Regards

David

Hi David,

By 1842, Elizabeth Maynard had had another daughter,  Mary (according to 1861 Census), so it seems odd that mum and 2 daughters are proving hard to find.

Excuse my dumbness, but were you suggesting in your last post that the 1841 Census family was referring to Elizabeth and John Maynard?

Regards, Michael.
