Help needed please - Surname PUVER
« on: Wednesday 20 August 08 08:01 BST (UK) »
Looking for Harriett Puver ???
Known facts are:

4th Sept 1911
4 Lennox Street, Nottingham ,James Puver was born to mother Harriett Puver a Lace hand, birth registered by H Puver, mother on the 27th Sept 1911.

4th October 1913 Register Office, Nottingham
Harriett Puver spinster aged 22 of 1 High Pavement Yard, High Pavement, Nottingham married Arthur Tom Luty.

On the marriage Cert. Harriett stated her father was Tom Puver (deceased) Bricklayer.

PROBLEM  ???

Where was Harriett born? according to the marriage cert (aged 22) that would make her year of birth abt 1892.
I cannot find her on the 1901 census, and she is not coming up on Ancestry BMD or FreeBMD at all.

I have found  on the IGI (extracted):
Harrietta Puver
Birth: 8th June 1892
Christening: 4th Sept 1892 Birmingham, Warwickshire
Father: Thomae Puver
Mother: Annae McManus Puver

On the BMDIndex:
Harriet Purver
Apr-June Q 1892 Coventry 6d 622

I have been unable to find Tom (Thomas) Puver on any census,

1901 Census Aston Birmingham
I have found a Thomas Puffer (1860 Birmingham) with wife Elizabeth (1860 Birmingham) and daughter Harriett (1892 Birmingham), but this Thomas is an Iron Plate Worker not a Bricklayer.
(On the 1891 Census Thomas was still married to Elizabeth and was still an Iron Plate Worker)

This clearly isn't the Thomae and Annae from the IGI, I cannot find them on any census.

Getting totally confused now and really need help  :'(

Which is my Harriett?

Any help would really be appreciated.

Many thanks
Jan

HI Janet,

Could the ANNAE on the IGI be a mis transcription of "ANNA E" The E could have been for ELizabeth!!.

The occupation on the marriage certificate is not always accurate and her father may have been an iron plate worker until late in his life and perhaps only a bricklayer much later. It might also be that Harrietta thought that bricklaying was more socially corect than an iron plate worker.

I feel you have found the correct families but purchasing some certificates may help.

Janet,

found a Thomas POVER b c 1849  married in the Manchester infirmary in 1881 census in the LDS site!!  He was a striker for a blacksmith!!!

Don't get too worried about POVER/PUVER/PUFFER/PURVER etc. It could all be the one name just recorded or transcribed differently each time.

good luck

Hi Robyn,
Sorry you have lost me....the problem is finding Harriett's birth, if she was telling the truth about her father's profession (bricklayer) thenthis Thomas who is a Blacksmith's striker would not be the right father.

Janet,

Just thinking outside the square: How do you know that she was telling the truth? It is only an assumption that she was.  Have you found his death at all?

And horrible thought could it be a mistranscription of "POWER"

Hi Robyn,
I understand this, but I feel I have to go by known facts (even if they are wrong in the end).  If I start looking at all variations of Puver, Purver, Pover, Power I will get knowhere.

If skp could find me the BMD for Harriett Puver that would be the icing on the cake lol

janet,

sometimes you just have to look at alternatives as the inforamtion is not htere. It is disguised in some way. Usually this is a misspelling ie

Dicksee has been transcribed in the IGI as Dickson and they were famous artists. Memebers of the RA etc maried a  into nobility and royalty attended the funeral of one who had been knighted.

I found a BDM for a THOMAS POVER
