Hi

We also tend to forget that there were an still an awful lot of people who could neither read nor write during that time period and if they went to register a birth, marriage or death and had a heavy accent ie Brummie or Geordie it would be very easy for the Registrar to spell it incorrectly.

My Rooney's are often mispelt as Roney, which I couldn't understand until I tried saying it with a soft Irish accent and then everything fell into place.
