There are two types of parishes in Ireland- civil (government) and religious. The townland (not town) of Breenagh is in the civil parish of Conwal. It has 886 acres and is in Letterkenny Poor Law Union.
See www.thecore.com/seanruad to find townlands and parishes in Ireland (at the moment the exact match search doesn't always work but I put in a search for 'bree' at the start of the word and it came up.

Thanks for your help. I think this might help narrow done search for family in this area as not a lot comes up for Breenagh when searching. Looking for any reference to a Doherty family from Breenagh around 1850. Children Michael & Francis (that I know of).
Warm regards,
Anna

Griffith's Valuation shows only a Madge Doherty (can't remember the spelling of surname) in Breenagh but Griffith's is not a census and only shows name of tenant:

My cousin, who visited Breenagh in 1993, said there are two branches of Doherty family, though they apparently are not close.  Our branch came from John Doherty who married Mary Kelly.  The female children ended up in St Louis, MO (Bridget, Grace, Anne, Marjorie) whereas the males (Patrick, James and Paul) stayed there.

My mother (daughter of Annie) is 94 and I am trying to get more information from her.

My great gran  Jane (1863) was from Edward Doherty and Bridget McCormack of Craghy, up the road. He elder half sister Mary (1855) also came out to NZ, married Hugh Kennedy and had a large family.  A story several branchs of third cousins tell is that their Great gran and her brother (went to Scotland and stayed) were  raised by a Doherty sibling in Breenagh. One lot even adds that they were sets of brother and sisters which would make the spouses Meehan's. All the Craghy Doherty's descend from Edward probably c1790's
