STOFFELL/STOVELL family of Bolney..
« on: Friday 22 August 08 19:32 BST (UK) »
Hello

Looking for info on the marriage of my Grt x 3 Grandfather Henry Stoffell born c1798 in Bolney.
According to the 1851 census he is listed as Henry Stoffle widower... cannot find him on the 1841 census.

There are many variations on the surname as his son Stephen is listed as Stoffell on his marriage cert to Agnes Pierce but other census lists have Stephen as Stovell, Stoffell and Stovill.  On the 1891 census the grandson John W Grigson is staying with them and I know that to be correct. As a matter of note cannot find Stephen on the 1871 census.... different spelling again?

Thanks

Viv

Hi Viv,

Do you have access to 1841?

Try HO107/1111/3 7 7
(Bolney, Sussex - leave surname out)

Hello

Thanks for that info folks......
I do not subscribe to any ancestry sites ( cheapskate !).... I use the free Ancestry.Com at my local library here in Portsmouth so when I am down there next week I will check out your leads and get back to you.

Is this the marriage?

Henry Stovel & Lydia Saunders, both otp, by banns, 26 December 1816 in Slaugham

Any particular reason to think they may have married in Hampshire, or should I move this to Sussex?  ;)

Hello

Thanks very much all you people out there... I think you might have solved my "little problem" ! My little tree has grown a few branches.

As a novice in family history (only been doing it for 12 months), I would be interested to know how you came about this particular information ? I would love to be able to find future queries myself, as part of the addiction that is known as family research is the detective work involved.  This is the only addiction that I know of which is FUN !
