Laidlaw and Hope - Yarrow MIs
« on: Wednesday 27 August 08 07:44 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Is it possible to have a lookup for Laidlaw and Hope in Yarrow Cemetery?

I am particularly interested in Margaret HOPE who married William LAIDLAW.  I believe she may have died between 1841 and 1843.  I am not positive of that though.  I believe William died in 1864.

Also interested in any children of this couple.  I believe there may be a Helen and a Catherine.  Yet again, not positive.

Thanks in advance,

Debbie

Hi Debbie.

Sorry I can't be of much help re your Hope Family, but know
that my Irvine Family's made contact with the Hopes in NSW after having left
Scotland in 1853 where some I believe, gathered stock in the Hunter Valley
before going onto New Zealand.

I also think a Hoy member married into the Irvine's in NZ.

Go to my "Royal Household " on this site to see more on the families of
Roxburghshire.

I noticed your reference to the Gillies Family of Aberdeen. My Grt Aunt's
Grandson Willie Campbell competed in Bagpiping against the famous
John McDougall Gillies in the 1890's.

John Gillies was a painting contractor in Aberdeen before going to Glasgow, where he eventually tookover the business of Peter Henderson Bagpipe Makers.

Go to " D F Hoy Family History " on google for the Laidlaw's and Hoy's of
Bovina NY USA.

Good luck

Regards

Mike Irvine

walcha ,I dont want to get your HOPEs up  but there are lots of Laidlaws in Yarrow MIs  but no margaret hopes. SP death records for William dying 1864 is a William Laidlaw  married to a Mary Allan died at Ashiestiel Yarrow.parents William Laidlaw and Agnes brown.
However on the births on one page there  are three entries
1839 William Laidlaw  shepherd Ashiestiel and Margaret Hope his wife had a daughter born May 27th named  HELEN.
1841 William Laidlaw shepherd Ashieshiel and a Margaret Hope his wife had a son born May 13th named JAMES.
1846 William Laidlaw ,shepherd \Ashiestiel and  MARY  ALLAN his wife had a daughter born June 8th named JANE HELEN.
IGIs show another Thomas born 5-6-1835 yarrow and a William born 19th oct 1832 yarrow.
Hope this helps rather than confuse you.
alan
take your pick
I can find no trace in SP or IGI for his wedding with  Margaret hope.
I have checked the MIs for Ettrick and Lirkhope which I personally transcribed and again lots of Laidlaws but no hopes

Thanks Alan,

I think it does shed some light on the issue.

The confirmation of William having a child with Mary Allen does confirm some of my findings on later censuses.

Thanks again,

Debbie
