Hugh Iorys Hughes - Colchester
« on: Wednesday 27 August 08 11:05 BST (UK) »
Hi

This is not a query on my own family history(which has hit numerous brickwalls!) , but an enquiry made to me by a customer where I work!

Hugh Iorys Hughes - born in Bangor, North Wales - was one of the people involved in the design etc of the Mulberry Harbours in World War 2.

I have been asked where he is buried.

He died in 1977 and I have found a GRO reference for him ...
HUGHES Hugh Iorys..... d of b 16 Apr 1902.... Death registered Sep Q 1977 Colchester.

According to a internet search, he lived at Besom House, Coast Road, West Mersea, Colchester, Essex.

It has got me curious too, as some work on the Mulberry Harbours was done locally to me at Conwy.

Can anyone help?

Many thanks on advance.

Regards

Jan

HI Jan

I am off to East Mersea tomorrow, so will pop into West and have a look in St Peter & St Paul Church to see if i can see a gravestone for Hugh. I'll also look in the graveyard at East Mersea as it's about 30 seconds from where i will be..

Hi Jan

just spoken to Rev Sam Norton of St Peter & St Pauls Church in West Mersea, he told me that there are no burials at the Church only interment of ashes, but W.Mersea has a municipal burial ground in Firs Road (which leads into Coast Road) so i will look here for Hugh I Hughes there

Well had a look online at the firs road cemetery and it's quite big!!

So i thought i'd phone Colchester Council and speak to the persons who deal with the Cemeteries, i think they have about 4, they put me through to the wrong department and put me intouch with Clacton, who kindly looked up H.I Hughes and i can tell you he's not buried in the municipal cemeteries in Clacton..

Because they obviously mucked up and put me through to the wrong person, i phoned back Colchester and as i type this a nice young gentleman is looking in there municipal cemeteries now for me. As soon as he phones me back i will post here Jan

regards

Hi Kath

Many thanks for your replies - sorry not to have got back to this before - but I didn't get notification that there had been replies!!

Thanks for the information - I will pass this information on to the customer at work who was asking about H I Hughes -  I had already given him some information which I had found on the web - along with the address of the local family history society.

I am sure he will be in again during the next week or so.

Many thanks once again - although a "southerner" now living in Wales, I don't know the Colchester area well (apart from a holiday to Suffolk, which was based at Colchester!)

Regards

Hi

Just a quick thank you for what you have done - it was greatly appreciated.

Will pass on the information and I am sure the gentleman will carry on searching, using the leads we have found for him.

Now, if only I could find my "missing " ancestors......! Still, it was a change looking for someone else!

Thanks again

Hi Jan
No probs hun anytime, Sorry couldnt help further
Maybe if your Customer applied for the death cert. it may have his last address, Colchester is a huge huge place and it may just narrow down where he's buried.

Anyway i know how you feel, wish i could also get past my personal brickwall, but then i always knew it wouldn't be easy haha
