Merthyr Cynog - Ty'n y wern COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 27 August 08 21:57 BST (UK) »
Hello, I wondered if someone with local knowledge of Merthyr Cynog or Upper Chapel area could help me find the location of a place called Tinriwern or Tyn y wern. I suspect it was the name of a farm or house that may have now gone?

My husbands great grandfather, George Munkley names it as his place of birth [Tinriwern, Brecknock] in the 1881 Census; in the 1861 census his father - a farmer of 60 acres [also George Muncle] names the place Tiniwern?

I have looked at maps, but I can't find anything to give me a clue.

Any ideas would be gratefully received?

Margaret :)

Hello again, I've think I've found 'Ty'n y wern' after spending hours on the COFLEIN mapping site www.coflein.gov.uk/
looking at all the house and farm names around the Merthyr Cynog/Upper Chapel areas. There is a house/farm of the same name  just north of Upper Chapel on a turning of the B4519 in a lane comprising three or four properties/farms and a chapel

In order to try to confirm that this is definately the place, I wondered if anyone who has access to the 1861 census to look to see if adjacent farms or houses listed on the census match nearby properties on the COFLEIN map as neighbours?

My family are listed in the 1861 census as follows [sorry I haven't got the piece or folio details] for Breconshire, Merthyr Cynog - Tinriwern
MUNCLE George Head, marr, 50, farmer of ? acres, Hay
MUNCLE Janet marr, 46, Llanfihangel n bran
plus family members

Adjacent properies on the modern map are:
Pantycelyn
Mynachdy
Gyrn Allt
Cwmllanerch

Any help with this would be gratefully appreciated

Margaret :)

Don't think much of the enumerator's writing on the 1861 for this district.  :P

The run of farm names appears to be
Cwmpistill
Vanfawr
Blaengwy
( Muncles)
Vanisha/Vanisaf
Neuadd/Noyadd

Can't see any of the modern names you give. This is the enumerator's description from 1871
"the whole division of Yskirfechan from the Cross Keys Public House of Merthyr Cynog to Pontfaen; and from Pontfaen to Alltcerig, and to Pant Farm House, and to Pentwyn Farm House and to Bailey Richard, crossing the river Yskirfechan to Car Farm house, adjoining Llanfihangel nant Bran parish and to Blaangwy Farm house and to Noyadd farm house."

Powys archives would appear to have detailed maps that might help

Hello osprey  :)
thankyou - that has really helped as I have now found Blaengwy and Neuadd just to the south of Merthyr Cynog. Will keep looking for the others - but expect some may be gone  :-\

Back to the maps !!!

 ;D  ;D  ;D
I've think I've found it ! !
Using the COFLEIN map on a really close zoom  - it is between  Neuadd to the east and Blaengwy to the west. Looks like the enumerator had to track across a few fields to me.
There is also a Vanisaf and a Vanganol [no Vanfawr yet  :)]

Thanks osprey - that's another one to visit if a building still exists

it was one of several uninhabited on the 1881, and it doesn't appear on the 1891, so I wouldn't hold out too much hope for the buildings, but glad you identified them.

Hi,
Are you still looking for information on Tyn y wern? There are still buildings between Neuadd & Blaengwy (not sure what but certainly unoccupied). I know the owners of the land, would you like me to contact them to find out if they know if they are called Tyn y wern?
