I keep coming across this phrase on A2A and would like to know what it means.

"Deed to lead the uses of a fine"

I have googled it without any success

Hi Reg
I have tried searching the site, but I can't find anything on Title deeds in the education section.

My intepretation would be that it was a document which was written and agreed in the earlier stages of a transaction.

The "fine" was the final document usually produced immediately after the purchase usually of land.

Hence the deed would be a document which was produced prior to the purchase laying out the details of the"fine" and thus leading to it.

There were many different types of deed used over the centuries to transfer land from one person to the next, and it also depended on whether the land was freehold or leasehold, etc. Often various deeds would state who could 'use' the property, eg. for the use of John Smith for the term of his natural life, and on his decease to the use of ... someone else!

From: http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/mss/learning/skills/deeds-depth/freehold-concord.phtml

"Medieval fines had the effect of conveying freehold or copyhold property from one party to another, for a monetary consideration. Later fines were additional legal documents providing back-up to a real conveyance such as a feoffment or a lease and release."

Many thanks to both of you.  It was the "to lead" that was puzzling me.  I will try that site it looks interesting, especially as Nottingham is my home town.
