Elliott Family, Fountain hill,Derry
« on: Thursday 28 August 08 11:18 BST (UK) »
Hello- am completely new to this. Am trying to trace my family, some of whom lived at Fountain Hill in Derry. My Great grandad and grandad were Blacksmiths there and were around until about 1930 (i think). Where would I begin looking? Thnks :)

Welcome to Rootschat. There are several sources for Londonderry that might help. You need to post the names and dates that you already know and what religion the family was as that will make a difference in where to search for records and what is available.

This looks like one of the family:
1910 Ulster directory- Londonderry (city)- Horseshoers- James Elliott, Fountain hill
www.libraryireland.com/UlsterDirectory1910/Londonderry4.php
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

I've just checked Fountain Hill on the Search the Covenant site.

It looks as though the Elliotts didn't sign it 8)

Hi. the elliott family lived in Fountain hill into the late 40s, maybe later even. I lived close to there and remember the forge still working. two of the children were Billy & John. I will check with the older members of my family as to more names. Will also check the 1901 census and Derry almanacs to see if any info there.
regards

thanks for the lastest posts. I have no idea what happened to the family after he 1960s. My dad was born in 1940 in england and remembers going to the forge to visit the family in the 1950s and early 1960s. he remembers the orange marches- his family are catholic. one of his uncles was involved in the easter uprising (dennis elliott) and i have his obituary. I have never met any of dads family except his dad, bill, who died in the early 1980s. I imagine that most of family are still in ireland. thanks for any more info.  does anyone  know how i can find out  more about dennis ? thanks!!!

My dad has told my that one of his uncles was in the RUC as well. Is there any record or a roll I could search? Dad reckons it was cir. 1950-55. Apparently he was quite high up in the force. A catholic family with a member in the RUC. This must have been unusual. My dad's dad left Londonderry in the 1930s sometime. I know that he was in the RAF as was his older brother, John. I am thinking that he probably wanted to escape something or someone.
thanks for help  :)
