  1.  Meles   Thank you once again.  Looking at my earlier post I realise I repeated what you had already written.  (Unfortunately I was in the process of tearing my hair out as I had just downloaded the latest version of my antispy and firewall and it was causing me serious problems).  I will come clean and say that I now live in Leatherhead and can make the effort to get over to Sutton although I am not keen on the place; fractionably better than Croydon!

2.  Phil         Thanks for the photograph and the confirmation of the home's existence.  Are you able to say whether this is the nursing home or is it a accurate guess?  But the great mystery remains - where was it situated and what is there now?

Hello Wyndam,

I used to live in Sutton  :D

I've just found it on a 1914 map, although they call what is now Epsom Rd, London Rd.
It is just north of the junction with Sutton Common Rd, before Lower Morden Lane, almost  opposite Woodstock (modern Woodstock Avenue).

I would guess that Wolsey Crescent passes along the back of it.

I have no idea what it is now, but I would be fairly confident that the photo is of the building.

An address search on the 1901 census should pinpoint the school.

Phil

PS
I've just checked the 1938 map and the building is still there but not named. I can't zoom the 1935 map, but think I can read Woodside.

Try having a look on Flash Earth. http://www.flashearth.com/

It looks like there are now blocks of flats on the site.

I know full well what's there now - my dentist!  :o

From Lower Morden Lane going south, it's a row of 1930's art deco houses (the type with flat roofs and those curved windows inspired by ships), then there's a parade of shops going to an around Tudor Drive (which is the extension of Sutton Common Road).

Nothing (that I recall from my visit 3 months ago) to show of the old school.

Meles/Geoff/Phil

What can I say other than thank you all so much.  The members of this site have come up trumps again.

Provided the weather is better tomorrow I will trundle into Sutton  and see if there is anything else to be found at the Council Library otherwise it will have to wait until next week due to prior commitments.

Yours,

Wyndham

Geoff,

Thanks very much for that piece of information.  I am surprised as it must be one of the few councils that functions on a Sunday, of all days!

Mark

To recap.  The home, according to earlier advice, was situated on the south-west side of Epsom Road between Lower Morden Lane and Tudor Drive.  I am interested in the late 1936 to mid-1937 era when it was a nursing home.  I would also like to know if the home and the school where one and the same place.

All being well I intend going to Sutton next week and any references to the guides in your possession would be very helpful.

I look forward to your reply with interest.
