Marais/Marris family of Norwich, England
« on: Sunday 31 August 08 05:45 BST (UK) »
Frank Marais, was a tailor in Norwich but I can find no trace of him prior to 1901 Census when he is listed as Frank Marris. Married Alice Morgan in 1894 under name Marais and claimed to have been born in Southhampton in 1862. I'm guessing he changed his name. Have tried alternative sounding surnames but nothing. Any suggestions welcome.

Hi, marriage cert:

Frank Marais  sept Q 1894  norwich 4b / 200

There does seem to be another Frank Marais in Norwich - middle initial H.

also a Frank Morris b 1862 in Portsmouth.

Since 'Tailor' was a skilled profession he had to have been a tailor in 1891.  Found this:

1891 Census - 7 Sedan Street, St. Peter, Ipswich, Suffolk

Frank Marria     Boarder   Single    30    Tailor              b. Jersey
(Ref.RG12 - 1467 - 123 - 21).

The name Marais appears on Channel Island Census' and origin seems to be France.

Cannot find anything in 1881 (here or on Channel Islands) but did find in 1871:

1871 Census - 35 Mary Bandains, St. Helier, Jersey.

Margaret Maris     Head    Wid.    40       Nurse         b. Jersey
Francis Maris         Son                 12       App. Tailor  b. Jersey

Annette
Scopes (One-Name Study - Worldwide)
Suffolk - Grist, Knights, Bullenthorpe, Watcham
Scotland - Spence, Horne, Cowan, Moffat
London -  Monk

HI

Following on the lines that he may not have been born in Southampton there is thei man in the 1881 census - I haven't followed him in the later census but the occupation does fit and the spelling is within the range that you found

1881 Census
Living inSt Clement, Jersey

Francis Marais 22 Sailor bn Grouville, Jersey
Elizabeth Marais 21 St Clement Jersey

Now his occupation does say Sailor but could it be a mistranscription or simply misheard

HI

Does anyone else think that the occupation of Frank Marris is SAILOR in the 1901?

Looking at the other letter of some of the other occupations I'm led to believe it should read SAILOR for the 1901 finding of Frank and Alice Marris.

Just to follow on my earlier posting of him being married to an Eliza* she is found in the 1891 still married but at home with her parents. Francis could easily be at see which is why he is unfoudn in the 1891 at least.

here's that REF
