Galashiels Church identification needed please
« on: Wednesday 03 September 08 12:46 BST (UK) »
Can anyone identify this church please? not the greatest pic i'll admit. It's a view of the rear of the church, taken from Ladhope Road and the building is now used as a fitness centre.

If you don't get a definitive response, why not call the fitness centre and ask if they know?

The Free Church was apparently in Ladhope.

Thanks Nell

I know one of the Presbyterian Chapels stood close to this one, (there is an East, West and South Chapel).

Two Baptist Chapels, the Roman Catholic Church, the Parish Church, two meeting houses and another building associated with the Free Church, Gala Aisle, the Episcopal Church, Haliburton (now demolished) and an unknown building in addition to this one make it a pain to try and discover what is where.

I have cracked most of them but a few still elude me. The building actually stands between Ladhope Vale and High Road, one of the Baptist Chapels stood on Stirling Street, just behind the white house in the picture and the building on the far side sits on Chapel Street.

This is Ladhope Parish Church.  I went to Sunday school there in the hall at the other side.   Didn't do me much good!!!

Hi,
A lot of my family was born at ladhope cottage (now golf course) and baptized  in this church. I had seen a picture of the church in my ggrandmothers post card collection.
I am trying to find some of the Tweedies,Shiels,Welches,Purves and
Paterson. I think this church building is
for sale. I believe I goggled it and it came
up for sale.
Thanks for the fond reminder,

Hi Gala Girl

I was baptized in Ladhope Church too.   I have lovely little birthday cards up to my fifth birthday from the Church.   I think my G father was an elder there and he went twice every Sunday.    I am going round by Ladhope Vale next week and will take a look and see what is happening there and keep you posted.

Cheers

Dear Rev
That is so nice to know. I feel so close to the family when I read the cards.  James Welsh and his wife Christina Paterson. She was my
great grandmothers sister. The lived at ladhope cottage. When my ggrandparents (Alex & Mary Purves) came back to Scotland and visited her family, who lived in Bradford,Sinclairshill,Galashiels and brother in Aberdeen City. Before they came to the US. They lived on  88 Croft St. They went to Ladhope Church when they lived
in Galashiels. Sorry for rambling. They sent
post cards to each other while they were visiting to check when they were coming to the next house. Anyway to read them make you think it was happening now.  I havent, been able to find where a lot of them were burried or when they died. After my GGrandmother died in 1912. The corraspondance stopped or wasn't saved. Thanks for the
memory. Any help would be appreciated. Gala Girl
