Holy Cross Cemetery Philadelphia
« on: Sunday 07 September 08 02:34 BST (UK) »
My great grandmother...Annie McBride....died in 1890. I have just recently found a "Return of Death In the City of Philadelphia" for her. It says that her place of burial is Holy Cross Cemetery. She was Roman Catholic.

So I googled and found a few references. I'm not familiar with the Philadelphia area...I have never been there and I'm a bit lost about place names etc.

I got three addresses so I looked on Google Maps and I see that two of the addresses are for a very large graveyard in Yeadon and the third is for a small graveyard in Lansdowne. They are very close to each other map wise. Then I googled again and found a website for a Holy Cross Cemetery in Delaware County PA. that has a listing of the graves and there is a record for an Annie McBride....no dates  :-\

Are Yeadon and Lansdowne districts of Philadelphia and where does the County of Delaware fit in  ??? ??? ???

mab.......Totally lost in Philly  :D

Hi

The Yeadon one is the one in Delaware County, Pennsylvania..... there are quite a number of McBRIDES in there, including an Annie! it has no DOB or DOD but there is a pic of the headstone. Perhaps there are other names you can recognise.

Find A Grave:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gs&

and search specific in the 16 Cemeteries of that name in PA  ;D But the Yeadon one is by far the biggest on FindaGrave:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=csr&CScn=Holy+Cross+Cemetery&CScntry=4&CSst=40

Cheers

edit: oops, I think that Find-A-Grave must be the site you googled up!! Sorry!  :-[

Thanks Ambly  :D I'll take a look. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I thought it was best to ask rather than wallow around on my own.

Annie died at the age of 26...her only child was sent back to Ireland to be raised by her husband's family. My Great Grandfather went off who knows where.... :-\ I don't know if those McBrides you mentioned are related or not... I probably will never know at the rate I'm going  :P

mab

added: I didn't see the picture of the gravestone where I was looking .....Thanks  ;D

Hi MAB: Yeadon and Landsdowne are neighboring towns in Delaware County, which is west and southwest of Philadelphia. Yeadon borders Philadelphia.  Google Maps has Yeadon at about three miles from the closest part of Philly and six miles to Center City, Philadelphia.

If you go to Google Maps and search Yeadon, Pa., you can zoom into see the entrance to Holy Cross Cemetery at the intersection of MacDade Blvd. and Rundale Ave. Sorry, but I can't get you any closer than that!

I found a death certificate for an Annie McBride, died Sept. 9, 1890. Age 26, Born England. DO you have this certificate?

I also followed the link to Find-a-Grave and found the gravestone for Annie McBride in Holy Cross Cemetery. No date of birth or death. There is a picture, which I'll post in a few minutes.

Regards,
John  :o :o

Hi again: Here's the picture from Find-a-Grave. You can barely see the name McBride, at the bottom. There are other McBrides, but different dates.

I'm not sure the picture above is your Annie McBride. There are also McBride burials with no first name. This link will take you to the search page for Holy Cross Cemetery

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=45101&CScn=Holy+Cross+Cemetery&CScntry=4&CSst=40&

If you want the death certificate, you can go directly to it at the Family Search Pilot site, from the Philadelphia Death Certificates with this link:

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#deathPlaceId=1114603;surname=McBride;searchType=standard;givenName=Annie;deathPlace=Philadelphia%2C%20Philadelphia%2C%20Pennsylvania%2C%20United%20States;deathYear=1890;p=1;collectionId=1320976

Or send me a PM tomorrow. I'm off line in a few minutes.
