Hello caro and welcome to Rootschat.

Can you give us some details about your great grandfather please?  Name, when married, age and occupation at marriage?  Also the names of the marriage witnesses might be useful.

hi

my gg grandfather was george clayton he was married to emily poole i can't find a marriage cert for them

they where both deceased at the time of my g grandfathers marriage in 1914
his occupation on the marraige cert is given as steelworks furnaceman
my g grandfather Arthur clayton was born about 1887 but was not on the scottish cen in 1901

so he must still have been in england at that time ?

Hello caro

I have drawn a blank on this in the 1891 and 1901 censuses.

I found an Arthur Clayton with mother Emily (a widow) living in Epping in 1891.  Emily remarries to a man named Parish who is dead by the 1901 census.  Emily's maiden name is Jenkins and I think her husband was Arthur. This does not seem to fit with what you know.

I assume you have checked the Scottish censuses for suname variants/mis-spellings?

arthur being the son and emily being the mother is correct

i have since found out through arthur marraige cert

that george was still alive (and retired) in 1914 when arthur married

but emily was deceased

i have also found emily's birth cert and she was born in dalrymple ayrshire in 1867

but still no record of a marriage

Welcome to RootsChat.
Do you think your Clayton family is connected to Caro's great-grandfather's family?
