Burke & Mythen family of Co. Wexford
« on: Wednesday 10 September 08 15:46 BST (UK) »
I have just returned to the UK after an amazing trip to the records ofice in Dublin trying to research my grandfather. I found his birth certificate which gave me his parents and then their parents. His name was John Burke b1908 and his father was Patrick b1880 and his mother was Maggie Mythen b1881. They all came from the Mounthoward,Boolavogue & Tomagaddy area in Co.Wexford. The name Mythen appears to be a bit unusual so does anybody have any more info that may help me to progress a bit deeper, anything would be a great help
Thanks
Steve West

Hi Steve

You may have already tried this, but doing a search of Google Books brings up a number of Mythens in Wexford in the 19th Century, including references to Sean Mythen, a writer.

Good luck!

The "Luke Mythen" mentioned below could very well be my great-great-great-great grandfather.  Where can I obtain "Slater's Directory"?

I have a copy on CD, the extract I posted are the only details for Luke in the directory. If want some more details for the parish or town drop me a pm with your email.

Hard-copy editions of Slaters are available in some Libraries - e.g. National lilbrary in Dublin

I got this CD from Eneclann, here in Dublin, link : http://www.eneclann.ie . it cost about €60.

there are two Mythen matches in Griffiths Valuation (for all Ireland) and these are both in Co. Wexford :

MYTHEN   Matthew    Townparks,  Parish : St John       Wexford  Town
MITHEN   Michael   Coolrainey,  Parish :  St Margaret   Co. Wexford (near to Curracloe)

these are both dated 1853

could be the ancestor of your Mythen family..

Hi Adele
My grandfather John (Jack) did have a brother called Patrick but he was born in 1902 ish. This I got from the 1911 Irish census when he was 9. How sure are you of the date ?!?! His father was called Patrick b1880 and his  father was Michael  but Michael married Eliza ( I think her maiden name was Sinnott but its unclear) and this info I got from Patrick's birth certificate.  Patrick married Margaret (Maggie) Mythen who was my great grandmother and again I got this from my grandad's birth certificate. The area of Enniscorthy & Ferns is about right as this is where Patrick & Maggie got married at Boolavogue Catholic Church so there may be a connection. You need to check the dates and the marriages to see if they tie up. It would be great if it did tie up but as you know Irish ancestry is really hard to sort
Cheers
Steve
