what is an elk? *completed*

having looked up the 1851 census the occupation of what of my relatives is listed as elk. Any ideas what this means. I know what a hind is but can find no clue as to elk.
Black- East lothian
miller- edinburgh, roxburgh and fife

Can you give us the ref. for the census page please ? 

It should start HO 107/

... unless its Scotland, in which case ... sorry, I'm now not sure !

It looks as if it might be a Scottish census so if you give the name, age and area, I'll have a look via SP.

Alternatively, would it be possible for you to 'snip' the relevant bit from the page and put it up here?

Are you sure it's elk and not something like clk  ???

certainly looks like elk. but could possibly be clk. In which case what is a clk?

I think it might well be  Clk   short for Clerk possibly  :-\

Here it is but I don't think it will be any more help - its elk or clk. I'm voting for clk=clerk

c and e on the rest of the page differ so not much help there.
