Ooh how loveley to be planning a garden wedding .
Have a little information

1841 John /Ann are living in Loscoe -just down the road from Heanor - now people from Loscoe would be more Likely to be  christened in Heanor

1851 John gives p.o.b. as West hallam - Ann as Loscoe

Possibly they married in heanor - in the brides parish

Son Edwin in 1851 is visiting another family -giving his p.o.b. as Taghill Derbys
Tag Hill is (kind of) at the "bottom end" of Heanor- almost between Heanor and Loscoe

Have a good sleep -if you want any of these census just ask

Here's a few census for you to ponder over when you have the time
(only just realised you are not necessarily looking for one married to Ann)

This is the John Shaw at Selston (census found by sueGill)

1861
Selston Notts
John Shaw head M 58 cattle dealer Heanor Derbys
Harriet wife 48 Eastwood Notts
John son 9 Selston Notts
Samuel haslam Lodger 44 ag lab Shirland Derbys
Thomas Witton Lodger 46 ag lab Wirksworth Derbys
RG9 2432 58 23

Think this is same family in 1851

Bagthorpe Notts (bagthorpe/Selston/Underwood all kind of "run into" each other)

John Shaw head M 48 cattle dealer Langley hall derbys
Harriet wife 38 Eastwood Notts
henry son 22 ag servant Underwood Notts
(John's p.o.b. is written as langley hall - I think it should be Langley mill -which comes under heanor census district and baptisms for that area would possibly take place at heanor St lawrence-later ones in langley Mill would be at St Andrews langley mill and St Johns Aldercar -but those churches were built later than St Lawrence)
HO107 2125 125 26

In 1841
Selston Notts
John Shaw 35 ag lab not b in county
Henry 10 b in county
HO107 861 2 2 1

Now is it possible that this John Shaw was a widower in 1841 ? Unfortunately it doesn't give marital status in 1841

But buy 1851 he had a son John age 9 and was with harriet

there is a marriage free BMD
Sept qtr 1841
basford district
2 of the names on the page are
John Shaw
harriet pollard
15 611

I can't find harriet Pollard in 1841 - but there are a few pollards b. Eastwood

Another John in a mo

or - this is purely guesswork - the John Shaw married to Harriet on 1851 census maybe married Ann oates in 1831 -they had a son henry and Ann died -then John remarried to harriet and had a son John????

Possible?????

Hi again Suz
Thanks very much for all the help  :).  Where did you find the 1851 with John born West Hallam and Ann born Loscoe as that is the one I've been searching for for ages. I'm pretty sure they are parents of my Thomas born Derbyshire c 1820.  His marriage  in 1850 in Nottingham to Betsy Richards says his father was John but death cert here in Australia says born Derbyshire England and aged 76 in July 1897 parents Edward and Ellen (giving me trouble for years).  The only Thomas correct age with father John is one in 1841 at  Civil Parish: Heanor; County: Derbyshire; Enumeration District: 21; Page: 42; Line: 2;. which I assume is what you found at Loscoe although I only had above address as civil parish Heanor and he was born 3 Jan 1821 at Loscoe christened Heanor 11 Jan 1824. In that census there is also a sister Frances born c 1833 and she is with parents at Barrack Lane Lenton age 29 in 1861.  I found 1851 Greenwich, Ripley, Derbyshire
Ann Shaw Head M 59 Framework Knitter Derbyshire Loscoe
Fanny daur 19                        "                     " Heanor
HO107/2145; Folio: 112; Page: 11
which seems to fit for mother and sister but no sign of father John
Then in your first message after I went to bed you stated
1851 John gives p.o.b. as West hallam - Ann as Loscoe
so did you find them together in 1851?
Thanks Carmel

I forgot to mention in last message that I'm also confident John Shaw and Ann Draper are the correct parents as Betsy's death cert says her mother was - Draper.  I'm pretty sure her mother was Millicent Cheetham from Nottingham and have other family here in Australia who's death cert. has incorrect parents where children have mixed up names having never know their grandparents so it's plausible for family to state mother's maiden name was Draper for Betsy when it was actually Thomas who's mother was a Draper.
Thanks again, Carmel
