Higo family lost in 1901
« on: Wednesday 17 September 08 15:16 BST (UK) »
Hello
I am looking for 3 men from the same family in 1901 I wonder can you please help.

Father Christopher Higo a Widower born 1855 Manchester, lived in Leeds, 1892 his wife dies and by the 1901 census he has left 2 of his 5 children,  in  St Vincents Home for Boys in Leeds, an other son with his inlaws.
We think Christopher may have gone back to Manchester, as we know he is living there in 1914.
Son George Patrick Higo born 1884 Leeds
Son Edward Higo  born 1881 Leeds
I can not find Christopher, George or Edward in 1901, if any one has any idea's or can help I would appreciate it
                                   Regards Sue

It would seem that Edward Higo joined the West Riding Regiment 1889.

There are far too mant pages to document..but he sounds to have been a "bad boy"not conforming to army life at all.

Ilost count of the number of times he was confined to barracks for using"foul and abusive language at an NCO" He had a couple of spells in prison cos he kept going awal...there is all kinds of things on it,I think he added 5 years to his age so he could "join up" and the document says Father Christopher Higo..Orange St poss Manchester.

His brother John also joined up and his many many pages of documents say he was worse than Edward LOL!!!..forever being drunk and disorderly..and threatening to shoot his NCO with a rifle...it all makes for facinating reading..These WW1 records are brilliant as they give details of such things as eye colour.hair colour, height, weight and scars plus all manner of things.

Hello Jane and Tricia
Thankyou both so much for this information,  I had not seen the army records of Edward or John, but I had found their young brother Daniel, and he was a bad boy too. but as you say it all makes intresting reading. Thankyou also  for finding George in 1901, and Edwards death, I really appreciate all your  help.
                                     Kind regards Sue  :)

I realise I'm very late to the party with this, but Edward Higo was my great grandad and he did live at Orange Street in Leeds for a time.  I knew he'd been in prison during his time in the army and changed regiments, but I didn't know what the misdemeanours were, although I think one of the AWOL charges were when he married my granny in Ireland. That said, one of his 'prison visits' was September 1916, and they were married in 1915.  Maybe he refused to take part in the uprising, I don't know.
When discharged, he was on an army pension, and I think he may have finally been discharged on medical grounds, although I'm not sure what.  He did meet a tragic demise though, dying in a poorhouse in Sheffield.  Curiously enough, my granny is listed as the informant on his death certificate, and she's listed as still living at Hendrick Street in Dublin.
Are you related to him?
