Who is Gunner Morgan? Boer War
« on: Thursday 18 September 08 22:25 BST (UK) »
A year or so ago I bought a Boer war chocolate tin from a house clearance, (my own ggrandfather was there which is why it caught my eye), it still has it's Cadbury chocolate and it's wrapping (a lead sheet and a sort of cloth-backed paper) with the soldier's address.
The surname is clearly MORGAN though the name has been obscured by a stain it appears to be Gnr. G. (that'd be Gunner George I guess)
The address itself is clear...
Upper hillmorton, Rugby, England.
If anyone knows of Gunner Morgan, I would be very interested to know, at the moment I've assumed he sent his chocolates home but never got back to eat them.
Thanks for reading.

Thanks Annie, actually, the more I look at it the less convinced I am that it's a G, could even be a cursiv H ! I daren't scan it as it is fragile.

I'll do what i can, watch this space...I will admit when I first looked at it I thought it said Mrs F Morgan but I got a second opinion who suggested Gnr G. I'm pretty sure he's right about Gnr but wrong about G!
I did find F morgans in the war but had no way of telling if they came from Rugby, there are a pair of brothers Frank and Fred in Rugby in 1881.
While I wrestle with Bluetooth, if someone can find Morgans in Upper Hilmorton in the 1901 census, I'd be very grateful.

I can't pick up Upper Hilmorton in the search - there are about 30 Morgans in Rugby - 1 Francis (who is a female) and one Fred, who has a street address in Rugby - no mention of Hilmorton

Tried 1901 at the National archives which allows place searching - no mention of Hillmorton or Upper Hilmorton (that I could find)  :(

Still browsing the Rugby

Trish

Edit Just realised Hillmorton has 2 l s and 2 districts all of its own  ::)  ::) I am a serious worry to myself  ;D

Thank you for looking Trish !! ... hope we didn't knock you off kilter too much ??  :D

Cad did say it looked like an "H " at one point ! ... and there is a George ... but the ages aren't quite right for the war !  :-\

Maybe if we can see a photograph we'll have a better idea who were looking for ! what do you think ??

George was with the family in 1901 & he does look a little young - but I have heard of them heading off at 16 - not sure about 14
