Where else can I look?
« on: Friday 19 September 08 17:40 BST (UK) »
Help please - I'm stuck already!  :'(

Got a name( George Golightly c1875 born in Sunderland) for my great-grandfather from the 1901 census, but trying to trace him back is proving impossible. There are two possible families, but one is only on  the 1891 census, and the other only on the 1881. The 1871 isn't any help either as both fathers are named John, one born in Ireland, the other in Sunderland.

Also I can't find any record of his marriage to Ruth? so can't even send for a marriage certificate. There are no living relatives to ask for more details.

Durham - Golightly, Bate, Spence, Anderson
Leics. - Stretton, Clarke, Martin, Weightman
Worcs./Staffs - Bate
Devon - Commins
Warwicks. - Noon

They have a son aged 2 mths on the 1901

John Golightly
March 1901  district Sunderland, vol 10a, page 700

If you order this you will get the mother's maiden name, (Ruth's name) which would possibly help to find the marriage (if they got married).

There are only two George Golightly born around this time anywhere (1873 to 1878)

George Joseph Golightly
March 1875 Gateshead 10a/903

George Golightly
Dec 1875 Tynemouth 10b/159

The next birth is 1877 in S. Shields which may be slightly too late.

Why do you not give the 1881 and 1891 family and we may be able to find them for you.

You'll need to give, name, age birthplace of EVERYBODY and census references.

This could be the marriage ???

George Gillogley to Ruth Ward

Sept 1895  Sunderland 10a/925

If you get the birth certificate of John for the mother's name, it would help to confirm or discard this one.

(If you think of Gillogley with an accent, it could be Golightly in speech or vice versa!)

Thanks Pauline, it didn't come up on the site I was searching -  George was a ship yard labourer on the 1901 census, and here is listed as a slater apprentice which made me think it maybe wasn't mine.

guess what, he is my Great-grandfather too and at a similar position to where you were. Did you ever find out which route to go, or any more info?
