Garston/Woolton c 1900?
« on: Friday 19 September 08 22:49 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I have a mention of 'The Big House' as a place in Garston or Woolton in around 1900 and just wondered if anyone might know where it was.  It may have just been a family nickname for a house of course in which case I will never know.  :(  I just thought I would try asking as you never know....

Here's hoping....

Thanks

Daff

Daff.

Could be the local Nickname of a Pub?

P.S.

Hi Daff

Garston and Woolton are a fair way apart. In Woolton was Woolton Hall - called Woolton Hall Hydro circa 1900 - and in Garston both Airburth Hall and Speke Hall are within a mile.

Hi

Thank you both for your replies.

Pegasuss, I remember when I was young living on the Wirral and our local pub was called the Big House so I had thought about this, but this 'Big House' was spoken of in hushed tones and I suspect someone from there, wherever it is, had caused a problem in the family.  This is all I know and it is puzzling me.

Thanks km, I have been looking at the halls around, I just thought it was worth posting in case it is a phrase that is well known in the area and someone would say "oh yes it is......".  I suppose it is what we all hope with our brick walls!

Thanks ever so much for your help.

Daff

Km, on re-reading this thread I realised I didn't explain why the two places, the family moved from Woolton to Garston at about this time.  So it could be in either place.

Sorry. :-[

Thanks.

Daff

Daff do you have address's in Woolton or Garston where they were stayin around this time
Have you tried making a search on the 1901 census
This may throw some light on it.
Garston Woolton are not that too far apart you know.
After all the main road linking them is Woolton road.
Forgive me for suggesting this
But could the Big house be an expresion for an assylum or rest home
As you say it was mentioned in hushed tones.

Hi Heyesie,

The family were in Rose Street Woolton in 1897 and King Street Garston by 1901, later moving to Stanley Street.

I think the big house was more to do with someone supporting the family in some way, probably financially but I am not sure and no-one will talk about it.  My imagination leads to all sorts of things but I think I shall have to put it out of my mind as one of those things I will not be able to find out.  I have several birth certificates with no fathers which leads me to think it may be connected with that and they are all in Woolton.  Perhaps I need to visit the LRO and look at the church records to see if they give any clue.

Thanks for your help.

Hello Daff

Rose street yes I know it well.
As for Garston Stanley street my Grandparets were living there in 1911 also.
There is a childrens home or was in Woolton.
I can't think of the name of it noe
But no doubt any Wooltonite reading this will put us right.
It was/is on the corner of Beaconsfiled road and Church road Woolton
I believe it was ran by the Catholics.
There is a big home at the top of the driveway

May have been called St Gabrieals
