Mason/Bricklayer
« on: Saturday 20 September 08 17:50 BST (UK) »
I have just found the 1870 Passenger List from England to Quebec for my GGgrandfather.   His occupation is listed as "Mason".   In this timeframe,  would that have been the same as "bricklayer" or does it indicate working w/ stone?    I was surprised to see this.  I was expecting Farmer, Laborer or Ag Lab.

Tks!

They tended to be separate - one working with bricks, the other, stone.

But I have a bricklayer in my family tree who gave his profession as "mason" on his wedding certificate. I guess he thought it sounded posher.  :)

Thanks, meles!    He was in farming before and certainly after .....  or it is the shipping clerk's mistake!

1861 Ag Lab
1866 Dau's  BC Farm Laborer
1868 1st Wife's DC    Laborer  (assumed farm ...but maybe not?)

Maybe being a mason was what he endeavored to do ??
Always a little surprise to keep it interesting!

Thanks again  :) :)
