Thanks to you both.

I found Sarah Ann and her two daughters on the Gipsy Queen in 1855.  Son Charles was not there, so can only imagine he might have died, or stayed behind as he would have been about 18.

I will look for a death for Charles in the meantime.

Regards
Jackie

Yes this is Charles the father.  In 1855, the mother and 2 sisters to Charles junior came across to Australia.  Charles junior seems to have stayed in England.

Have you looked at the actual passenger records?

You mentioned that Charles was a mariner and had been a ship's captain - could this be him arriving in Victoria

ROBERTS   CHARLES CAPT   48   OCT   1853   AUDUBON   F   016   00

I think the passenger records need to be checked as we are only looking at indexes.

You  mentioned he was born in Kent but there is this baptism [correct parents' given names] in Yorkshire.

From familysearch.org

Charles Waid ROBERTS
20 Mar 1805      Hornsea, Yorkshire, England
Parents
Father     John ROBERTS
Mother    Elizabeth

I searched  for a Charles ROBERTS and an Sarah marriage for two years before the birth of Charles jnr in 1837 and this is one I found...do you know Sarah's maiden name.

From familysearach.org

ROBERTS Charles
EASTES Sarah Ann
4 Aug 1835  Saint Marys Portsea, Hamshire.

I found a a possible baptism for the above Sarah

Sarah Ann EASTES
2 Jan  1814      Saint James The Apostle, Dover, Kent, England
Father    Daniel EASTES
Mother     Ann

I see that Sarah Ann married again in 1869 to Eaton COLCLOUGH and her death reg in 1895 at Warrnambool shows father's name as William EASTER - I suppose that allowing for mistranscriptions and lack of information by the informant...the above baptism and marriage on familysearch.org could be a couple of possibilities.

Cheers

And the family on the 1851 Census Ref HO 107/1555
Residing at Robinhood Lane, Bromley St Leonards, Middlesex

Charles Waid ROBERTS  Head Married Aged 46  Master Mariner  b. Yorkshire
Sarah Ann ROBERTS  Wife Married   Aged 36    b. Kent
Charles Waid ROBERTS Son  Aged 15  Absent at sea  b. Middlesex
Sarah Ann ROBERTS  Dau   Aged 13   b. Middlesex
Rosina ROBERTS  Dau   Aged 10   b. Middlesex

So the evidence definitely points to Charles Waid Snr being born in Yorkshire.

Hi there to Cando and Raylen,

Thanks so much for your information.  I found a christening for Charles Wade Roberts, parents John Roberts and Elizabeth in Dover 1808, but there is also the baptism in Yorkshire in 1805, so i am a little confused with this man:)
He was a master mariner, and captain of the ship Columbine which voyaged to Algoa Bay in 1840, with his brother George Henry as a mate.  The ship then went down the coast to Table Bay a year later for repairs and returned to Algoa Bay, but it was captained by another guy by the name of Captain J Hulme.  No mention was made of Charles Wade Roberts.
I presumed he went back to the UK to face charges, as in 1837 he was in jail for insolvency.  Again he was put in jail in 1850.  His family went to Australia in 1855, and he was supposedly to have gone to Australia in 1853.  There are two records that people have found on this request, one for April 1853 on board Albatross and the other for October 1853 on board Audubon.  Although now, that we have the second one, that one looks a better bet.  Obviously i would have to see the passenger records, but how would i go about that? :-\

I know that Sarah Ann Eastes married Charles Waid, but i have also found a marriage for him to a Josephine Toureneur in 1830.  I think from what i have found, that he married Josephine first, she died and he then married Sarah Ann.  I also know that Sarah Ann's parents emigrated to South Africa and died in Port Elizabeth, Cape in late 1870's. Have so far not found their passenger records.

I thank you all for your help here.  Just proves to me again, that genealogy people are very helpful and friendly.

Regards
Jackie

On the 1851 Census Charles Waid is noted as born Yorkshire and the record I have given you re his baptism is an extracted record not submitted.  The spelling of both he and his son on the 1851 Census is Waid as is the extracted record.  His age, according the information given at time of death, was 56 years old in 1861 ie born 1805.

Did you notice that the marriage in 1830 is for a Charles Ward ROBERTS. May not be the same man.

There is a submitted record with the name as Wade and born Kent...is this to which you are referring.  I treat submitted information with caution.  Need to do your own research to validate the information.
