Hi,

Matthew Courtoy Haynes isn't the Matthew I'm looking for... 'Courtoy' definately doesn't pop up anywhere in my family tree.

For the Matthew that I'm looking for... I've been searching for marriage and death records in Australia and in the UK, but with no luck so far  :(  My mum told me the Matthew went to Australia by himself, so I guess that rules out him getting married in the UK. There was also a suggestion that one of his sisters may have joined him but I don't know how true that is.

Matthew seems to be a bit of a mystery.

Hi Jenn,

Thanks for the address... I've been having a look through my notes but haven't matched it up yet, although I think that there's a good chance it could be correct. I'll see if I have any luck with the UK phone directories for that period.

Found out this afternoon that my dad has recieved a copy of Matthews birth certificate which confirms that the Australian service record (the 1900 one)  is correct  :) and that Matthews parents were called Matthew and Lucy.

Thanks again,

Rach

What were his sisters' names?  Do you know?

We may be able to locate the one who came [if], especially as we now know the parental names.

Also  on  the 1901  census fo  the family  (the enumerator was a wee bit lazy  and  has put a lot of initials instead of  their christian names)
there is an L C Haynes aged 7

and  in  1912 on  the same page

 Lucy C Haynes 1912 Jan-Feb-Mar Stafford  Staffordshire
John Howard 1912 Jan-Feb-Mar      Stafford  Staffordshire

Did the following search...and am in a rush today -
Australian Electoral Rolls 1900-1936
1936
HOWARD  Catherine Lucy  30 Fitzgerald Street, South Yarra  Home duties

Only HOWARD at this address

and this possible re-marriage  in 1937
HOWARD Catherine  Lucy
FORDHAM  Harold John
Reg# 5744

Then there is this death...perhaps she remarried again or it  may not be her :-\

WILLIAMS Catherine
Father Haynes Unknown   Mother Unknown  WHITE
At Mildura  93 years   1978  Reg# 8335

Some leads for you or someone else to follow up.

Cheers

I haven't found Matthews date of death yet in Australia... I'm a bit stumped!

Talking to my parents, my mother remebers him coming back to the UK for a visit around the late 1960s/early 70s... he was in his 60s. He wasn't with anyone when he visited, so he may not have married.

It looks like his sister (we think she's Mary) didn't go to join him in Australia, but went to Canada before Matthews brother John (my great grandfather) went out there. John served in the Canadian Forces but came back to the UK... I'm still researching this info as I'm not sure that I have the right Canadian Service records. I think Mary may have stayed in Canada.

The 1901 census seems to be the right one though:

John Haynes (6)   ..... My Great Grandfather

L Haynes    (34) .... Lucy Handley (Beckett after 1st marriage)

L C Haynes (7) ... Lucy Catherine Haynes (married John Howard)

M Haynes (45) .... Matthew Haynes (My Great Great grandfather)

M Haynes (8 months) ... Matthew Haynes (My Australia connection)

Mary Haynes (3) ... we think she went to Canada

T Haynes    (5) ... Thomas Haynes

It's been a bit tricky unraveling the Haynes family, but it looks as though I'm making some progress now. The date of birth being wrong on my great grandads death certificate didn't help.

Thanks for everyones help... if anyone can discover when Matthew Haynes' died that'd be brilliant.

Thanks cando.

I just caught your post.

I don't think this is the right person, My mum remembers John Howard (refered to as Jack) visiting her family in Staffordshire. This would have been during the 1960s/70s. I'd assume that if Lucy Catherine went to Australia, her husband would have gone to.

Thanks for looking though  :)
