James Alexander Lamb - 1911 Census
« on: Thursday 25 September 08 22:30 BST (UK) »
James Alexander Lamb was born in St Peters, Dundee, Scotland on 27 Nov 1882. He emigrated to Vancouver between Aug 1908 and Sep 1912. He was accompanied by his wife Mary b.1887 St Andrews, Fifeshire, Scotland.

Is it possible to find them on the 1911 census?

Can his death date be found?

Any information at all would be appreciated - he was my great uncle.

Thanks Laurina

You can search the 1911 Canadian census (free) here:
www.automatedgenealogy.com

Might be worth looking at migration records on www.findmypast.com (passengers leaving U.K. 1890-1960) to find when James Alexander Lamb went to Canada. The index is free and will give name, year and port of departure as well as port of arrival and sometimes approx. year of birth.

British Columbia vital records here:
http://search.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/sn-4ACA61A/gbsearch/Deaths
Looks like James LAexander Lamb died in 1967.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

I have found the following immigration record:
1914

contact in country from which alien came - Mother - Margaret Lamb, Dundee, Scotland,
final destination Seattle
accompanied by
Mary L Lamb, 28

Does this sound like your James?
If so I will send you the image (lots more info on it) if you PM me an email address.

Wow,  That was quick and such an amazing amount of detail. I thought he only had one daughter - I know nothing about Mary at all. I'll have to track her down somehow.

Margaret was born 11 Sep 1912 and went on to marry William Stratton about 1938 - Her full name was Dorothy Margaret Lamb. I know they had one son b.1946.  William Stratton b.1901 came from Govan, Scotland but Idon't know when he arrived in Canada either.

Thanks for the website links too.

Hi Nell,

Do you know where can I find out more about the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force - is there a website with the Attestation Papers on?.

I'm surprised the women of the family travelled home to Scotland during WW1.

After you have found information on your ancestor - hit the link

This can be anywhere up to hundreds of pages.( No battle history, though)

Might be reaching, but would this be your William?

In addition to the death for James Alexander Lamb on the BC Archives Vital Events Index, there are a few Mary Lamb's and one seems to match the date of birth - Mary Leslie Lamb, died in Vancouver in March 1920, aged 34yrs.

There is also a marriage for James Alexander Lamb to Ellen Wheeley/Poynton on 4 Dec 1920 in Vancouver.

I can look up the registrations on my lunch hour tomorrow to see if they are the right ones.
