Puffett/Puffitt

I have been researching the Puffett (Puffitt) family of Filkins/Leafield in Oxfordshire on behalf of a friend in South Africa. It's been great fun, being quite an unusual name & I'd love to track down the source of the name sometime. One theory is that it's Huguenot from France (Puffet is a Belgian surname, also variants in Germany & Italy). There is a definite core around Filkins/Broadwell.
Does anyone know any more?

My South African friend's GGrandfather Joseph Puffett emigrated from Leafield in the mid 1800s. Joseph was son of James Puffett (1797) & Dinah Holloway. He emigrated with his sister Ann & her husband. Probably there were others in the party too.

My friend Derek would love to meet anyone interested in this family and perhaps to find out a bit more. Every time he comes to UK (for business, a charity), he looks in the phone book in whatever part of the country he is, and phones any Puffetts. But they have all been uninterested (maybe suspicious I guess), which disappoints him. It seems a shame because he's a really nice guy & really interested in his family name. 

Is anyone with Puffett/Puffitt ancestry interested in communicating with him? He is coming to UK in October & plans a trip to see Leafield, now we have tracked that down as being where his ggfather came from. It is only a few miles from Broadwell, where Joseph's Gfather Thomas (c1758) came from. Thomas was son of John Puffett (c1725) of Broadwell.

I'd love to hear from anyone who knows this family or is interested in the origin of the surname.

hi my name is puffett and i am also trying to trace my family.
so far i am back to my ggg grandfather although i have only been doing this for the last 6 weeks on the internet as i now live in shetland.
the plan is to get as much info as possible to take to swindon at christmas to give to my father and spend time having a look around filkins church yard.

hi my family as up to now came from originally filkins my g/granfather was william puffett dob 1874 he marrid maria gardner and had about 14 kids.
his father was james dob1855 he marrid a mary ???and had 4 kids william , emily, alice, and louisa.
thats the ones i am sure of at the moment.

a couple of years ago my uncle had a phone call from someone asking questions about his family, like his mothers name etc. but he wasn't sure who was asking so he kept quiet. strange if it was you
