Marriage - Mary KING to JOHNSON in Bucks or Warwick
« on: Sunday 28 September 08 18:53 BST (UK) »
Hello,  hoping a fresh outlook can help....

Mary King b. 1838 in Middle Claydon (often interchanged w/ Steeple Claydon)  Parents:  William and Sarah King

I have her w/her parents in 1841 and 1851.

Can't find her in 1861.

1871 Castle Street  Warwick Castle St. Mary Parish, Warwickshire
Mary Johnson 34  1837  Middle Clayton, Berkshire [ “Bucks” on actual]   Widow   Servant  - Laundry Maid

Then,   BMD
Mar Qtr 1873
George Henry Grubb  m.  Mary Johnson
District: Warwick  County: Warwickshire
Volume: 6d  Page: 591

1881  41 Smith Street   St. Nicholas  Warwick

George Henry Grubb 59  b. Warwick   Occ:  Smith (Master)
Mary Grubb 43  b. 1838  Steeple Claydon, Buck   Married   Occupation: Laundress
George's Children:
Agnes Mary Grubb 26
Annie Foster Grubb 20
Edward Walter Grubb
Grandson  John Harris Grubb 10    and
Neice  Mary Edith Blake 7  1874  b. Middle Claydon, Buck   Scholar

The niece Mary Edith Blake is the clincher because this is Mary King youngest sister (Marie King Blake's) child.

BUT really need the Marriage of Mary King to a Mr. Johnson sometime between 1851-1871 and to place Mary in 1861.

(FYI,  I have a death for George Henry Grubb in 1882 in Warwick.   Mary joins her brother in the US in the 1890''s and dies in the US.)

Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Hello There.......

Mary King to HENRY JOHNSON / registered September quarter 1865 / Birmingham / vol 6d page 57

There are quite a few death registrations for Henry Johnson between 1866 and 1870 in Warwickshire
But if you had his age , from the marriage certificate , it would help to pin him down.

Hi JeannieR,   WOW !! WOW!!

That's a fantastic find and I will be ordering the cert tonight!

Birmingham is a real surprise. Have never had any leads go in that direction with this group.  Wonder if I will be able to find Mary as "King"  in 1861 in Birmingham as well ?   Will be working hard on that later.

Many, many thanks for picking up on this aging inquiry and working on it.

Will let you know what I find.

Lissa......

I THINK your Mary is on the 1861 census living at.......

20 Hereford Road North , Paddington , as a servant to the "Shachan " family .

RG09 / Piece 2 / folio 133 / page 25

The age is slightly out , ( 21 ) but I have found this to be quite common, in census returns. She is with another young lady Charlotte Darvil , also from Buckinghamshire.

It is quite amazing , how far our ancestors moved , looking for work .

Hi JeannieR,

I ordered the Marriage Cert so in about 10 days we will know if that is a match!!

I have looked at that 1861 census for Mary King in Paddington w/ the Shachan family previously.  Even did a little research into the Shachan family as the tie to Ceylon holdings was intriguing.   I think I also looked into Charlotte Darvil to see if I could connect her to Mary or Mary's family in Buck  ...don't think I could but will re-investigate that.   It is very encouraging that you see this as a possible match......  I was thinking I was grasping at straws on that one.

Again, thanks for your help and for providing a new line of investigation.

hmmmmmmmmmmm

IGI has an extracted marriage for Henry Johnson to Mary Ann King on August 25, 1865  St. George  Warwick Birmingham.

Never seen "my" Mary with a middle name nor does anyone in this family have a middle name until the youngest dau (Mary's sister) Maria King Blake named all her children using them.

Hi Jeannie,

Don't know if you are still following this thread but received the marriage cert today.  Don't think it is my Mary King, however.    It matches to the IGI above  --  Mary Ann King age 17 so b. 1848   her father is Joseph but his last name is not King --  maybe Hampton ??? and occupation I'm not sure of -  "something maker".
Looking for but haven't found yet this  Mary Ann in 1861 w/ parents  or 1871 w/ Henry Johnson so I can definately eliminate her.

SO....think it's back to the drawing board for my Mary!!

Thanks for your help!

UPDATE - Mary KING JOHNSON GRUBB in Bucks or Warwick - COMPLETED
« Reply #7 on: Sunday 18 January 09 14:27 GMT (UK) »
UPDATED AFTER A SURPRISE IN THE 1911 CENSUS  ;D

Went to the 1911 to see Mary's sister, Maria Blake, in Middle Claydon, Buck in 1911 and Surprise!!  Mary Grubb age 72 was with her!

SO,  the 1885 trip to the US to be with her brother was a visit not a permanent relocation.  It was possibly a long visit, however.......  a Mary Grubb returning to England on the Campania in 1895, possible citing as a domestic servant in Cheltenham, Gloucester in 1901 (w/ her age off by 9 years!) and a death cert in  Sep, 1925 in Buck.

So a big step but still nothing further on the mysterious Mr. Johnson,  her 1st husband.  May never know!
