Windmill at Broad Oak
« on: Monday 29 September 08 12:34 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm trying the find where Pontin's Mill, Rockhill on the Heathfield boundary was located - there is a Rock Hill House, at Broad Oak on the Burwash Road has anyone any old maps or any info on the Windmill.
My Richard 'Bodle' Holmes was born there in 1780.
Thanks
Sue

Hi Sue,

The Mills Archive site has a few entries on a post mill at Broad Oak that it calls "Rockhill Mill".  All the entries seem to be photographs of the mill machinery from the 1940s.  There is also a map reference.

May I ask how you know Bodle was born there?

Hi Stovepipe

I have a book 'Around Heathfield in old photographs' (A second selection) there is a picture of Richard 'Bodle' Holmes sitting with his clay pipe and wearing his Sussex smock  - Broad Oak Centenarian born at Pontins Mill on the Heathfield parish boundary - its believed  that he lived to 107 years old.
I'm going to Batemans at Burwash tomorrow - so I'm hoping to find the area where the mill may have been - I'm also going the look around the churchyard at Burwash for any Holmes if I see any Haffenden I will make a note for you.
Regards
Sue

Hi Sue

This site has a page on Rock Hill Mill.  Quite a useful site and I use it a lot.

Enjoy Burwash tomorrow, I'll wave as I drive through to work and back  ;D
