Poor Relief records are kept at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow and not available on line. Not sure where you are based?

Hi,

I'm in the USA so have no way of looking for yu..but I have
gotten lots of help by a request for a lookup when someone
is going maybe they would look for you if you are not able to
go there....They could have been ill and had to put the child
where they were safe....Crookedtail

Hi Again,

Checked at the Mitchel today and have some news for you, might not be what you were expecting but here goes -
There was 2 applications for poor relief as follows -

Applicant - Mary Reid. 3 Middleton Building Govan Lanarkshire.
Date of application 30 Sept 1878. Age 9
Birth Place Goven - Religion Protestant.
Daughter of Thomas Reid Boilermaker PSNC "Chile" (Pacific Steamship Navagation Company) & Agnes Down
(Residence unknown) who absconded in 1875 after lifting all monies from bank belonging to her mother

It then goes on to list a letter which was really hard to read.
2nd application - Marion Reid. 3 Middleton Building Govan Lanarkshire
Date of application 30 Sept 1878. Age 7
Sister of proceeding claimant - refer for details.

Relief given was again hard to read but basically stated that the were in the care of Widow Tanish in Govan
1882 transfered to mothers aunt in Govan.

So it looks as if their parents abandoned them and ran off with the family cash. There was a lot in the letters which would have took ages to transcribe so i have ordered photocopies of all the pages relating to the two sisters which I will pass onto you once they arrive in the post, I'm didnt look to see if the other Reid applicants on the poorlaw index related to your side as I was running short on time, but there details are in my wee reference book so I will next time I'm there as I go quite often.

Heres a link for the PSNC -

Gerry. to say that I am gobsmacked would be putting it very mildly indeed. I haven`t quite taken all the information in yet but the first thing that strikes me is the name Agnes Down. Granny was called Marion Downes Reid and her mother was Agnes Cleland and I have grannys birth certificate to that effect. I also have her parents marriage certificate which states that Thomas Campbell Reid married Agnes Cleland in 1865. I always wondered about the Downes part of her name so who was Agnes Down? Having said that,I have never been able to find anything on Agnes Cleland. And who is the mothers aunt? Granny doesn`t seem to be anywhere on the 1891 census and how did she come to marry on tyneside in 1893? Curiouser and curiouser. Anyway Gerry you have made more progress today than I have made in a long time and I have to thank you very much for giving your time to me in this way.and I look forward to any further information you may be able to uncover
