Coupar Angus: William Henderson and Emilia Symers c1730 - 1800
« on: Monday 29 September 08 16:30 BST (UK) »
Hi. I am researching the history of the house that I was brought up in: Larghan, Forfar Road, Coupar Angus.  I believe that the house was built around 1780, and at that time was known as Summerfield.  The name was subsequently changed to Pleasanthill, Bellevue, and finally Larghan.  The last name is believed to have originated in Afghanistan since the then occupant was in the British army in Afghanistan in the 1870s.

The person named in the deeds as the builder was William Henderson.  I have very little  knowledge about him, but have found a William Henderson born in Coupar Angus on 15/04/1730.  He was described as a retired vintner by the time the house was built.  The deeds also state that he was married to Amelia Symers.

The land that Larghan was built on was purchased from the Galry, or Galray, or Gauldry estate, which I believe was once part of the Denhead estate.

Are there likely to be any records re land purchase / house building in the late 18th century in the Bell library in Perth?

Any help gratefully received

Colin

Land Transactions are recorded in the Sasine Register held in the NAS in Edinburgh.
The Bell Library on line search facility suggests they do not hold transcriptions but why not phone the Local Studies Dept for advice.
Hope this helps.

I am new to Scotland research. My wife is nee Ferguson and her family is
from Coupar-Angus then Dundee. Her oldest known Ferguson is Findlay Ferguson through his
son John, 1792 to 1862. John died in Coupar-Angus.
So Colin have you worked on your Ferguson line and are you related to my wife?
John

I have only just seen this.  My family didn't come to Coupar Angus till the 1840's, so not related to your wife.
