Looking at Elstob births from 1900 I found that they came exclusively from a small area of north-eastern England, and there appeared to be several Elstob families having children in Sunderland.

From 1911, when mothers' surnames were mentioned in the BMD records, I found other children of Joseph and Maria - Mary J Jun Q 1912, Catherine A Sep Q 1914, David B Dec Q 1920, Jane K M June Q 1924 and of course Florence B in June 1926.  There were other Sunderland Elstob births between 1904 and 1911, but of course no mother's name to cross-check whether they belong to Joseph and Maria.

Possible births for James in Sunderland:

James William Dec Q 1872 10a *94
James Sep Q 1878 10a 571
James Hunter Dec Q 1880 10a 584
James Sep Q 1883 10a 580

I searched from 1870-1885. James's marriage cert should eliminate or confirm the second names James William or James Hunter.

Sorry if I'm duplicating anything  :(

They had at least three other children
Birth Jun 1912  Elstob Mary J.  [Kennedy] Sunderland 10a1476
Birth Sep 1914 ELSTOB Catherine A.  [Kennedy] Sunderland 10a1552
Birth Dec 1920 Elstob David B.   [Kennedy] Sunderland 10a1362

It looks as though James Elstob was away in the war between 1914-1919.

There's a possible WW1 medal card for a James Edward Elstob on The National Archives website:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/search/quick_search.aspx?j=t

and put James Elstob into the search box, it should be the top item WO 372/6.  You can download it for £3.50.

Although the name doesn't fit in with the birth registrations found..... :-\

Kind regards
