« on: Tuesday 30 September 08 13:34 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I am looking for the death of Alfred Ernest Curtis, he was born in Cornwall in1900 and died it is thought in Devon only trouble is I don't know the year, is it possible to find or do I keep pestering the only rellie still alive?
Thanks Nurserygirl

overall you should find it no different to search for a death than a birth or marriage.

The problem may well be given that the fully indexed records peter out in the 1920s (FreeBMD), you have to search Quarter by Quarter after that..... each 'page' of names is only indexed by the first and last names on the page, so once you are in a year and particular Quarter, its a manual scan thru.

If you have no idea of the year, then its going to be a trudge I'm afraid.

Keep pestering to narow down the period you have to search - for example did he participate in WW1 and WW2 etc ....

Carol,

Steve was right to suggest considering  the death registered as Alfred Edward, birth and death names do not aways correspond. My own step father-in-law was registered as Charles Henry at birth, but he married as, and was registered at death as Charles Edward.

In another example, I was looking for the birth of a William Henry, this was the name on the marriage and death certificates, after wasting a lot of time and money on incorrect certificates, I finally discovered his birth was registered as William Herbert, they don't make it easy for us. ;D

Birth of Alfred Ernest Curtis was registered March Q 1900 in Helston (there are no others in Cornwall 1899-1901) - making a birthdate of 18 Aug unlikely.

An Alfred Edward Curtis was registered in Pancras Sept Q 1900

I would urge caution.

I would have agreed with you had we been able to narrow the death down to a few years, but as we have absolutely no idea when he died...from 1900 to 2008  :o I think we should start off trying to find someone with the exact names.

Nurserygirl,

Can't you pin the death to a shorter time frame, for example is this chap one of your grandparents- did you know him,did he attend anyone's wedding that you know of,did he serve in the war,who and when did he marry, did they have kids.....and when?

You'd be surprised once you start to think more laterally what you can come up with. Then one of us could trawl a few years for you, quarter by quarter, just not feasible over such a large time period.
