Army barracks St Woolos Monmouth
« on: Thursday 02 October 08 01:06 BST (UK) »
Hi there, Does anyone know of any Army Barracks which may have been around St Woolos Monmouth in 1852?
I have a GGGrandfather who was in the 1st Royals in Aberdeen in 1851, According to the later census's his son William Edward Leatham was born in MonMouth St Woolos? in around 1852. This would be a great help to his movements in the Army if I could link these to a barracks. Also is there a way I can look for his birth record on the internet?

Gerry, the barracks you are probaly looking for are Raglan Barracks in Newport, which I believe would have come under the St Woolos area of Newport[I`m sure someone will correct me if I`m wrong!]From the Regimental Births  there are these two births:

William E LEATHAM 1st R.SC Newport Mon 1853 Vol 1279 Page 1
William E LEATHAM 1st R.SC Newport Mon 1853 Vol 1279 Page 55

Steve,

Thats fantastic and would fit in perfectly with my William Leatham as the 1st royals became the !st royal Scots.

Many Thanks

If I could just ask for another look up for Woolos Barracks.
I'm trying to find the birth record for a Mary Dance. Born 1871,  parents should be James and Elizabeth.
TIA.
Nick

both Newport                                      vol          page

Mary E Dance 1871  81st Reg            1658         66
Mary E  Dance  1871  81st Reg          1872?       10

Guessing these are one and the same person? The writings abit blurred.Hope this is of some help?

Hi Steve
I'm hoping you might be able to help me with a similar question?
I'm trying to find out the regiment of a Matthew Clements Gray, who had a daughter born in Newport Barracks in 1853. Her name was Jane Gray.
He had a few other children in different barracks: William in Ireland 1850; Elizabeth in Weedon 1851; Margaret in Carlisle 1855 and Mary Ann in Ayr 1859.
Mary Ann is my great great grandma.
Seems strange he moves around so much, maybe he's in military prison or is a prison guard?
Anything you can do to shed some light would be brilliant.
Thanks
Steve
