John Wylie b.c.1779-`Berwick`.
« on: Saturday 04 October 08 08:28 BST (UK) »
When John enlisted (at Berwick) in 1798 he gave his age as 19 (b.c.1779) and stated born in Berwick.
I have been unable to trace his birth/baptism in any Churches/Chapels in Berwick and now wonder if his place of birth was Berwickshire.  I have checked LDS. He died in action at Lisbon 1812.

Can anyone help please? Any advice welcome too.
frek.

PS. John married `Maria` (no maiden name known) 1798-1810, but as he was in the Army this could have been in any part of the UK.

HI Frek  :)

I've had a look on SP but nothing is coming up 1775-1785 in Berwickshire. There are various reasons for not finding a baptismal record - missing/lost records and not baptised in the Church of Scotland.

There are a few marriages for a JohnWylie and Maria but, as you say, it could have been any of them. None in Berwickshire though!

Regards

If it makes you feel any better, I have an  N x great uncle who was b. c. 1775 according to his gravestone in Kells. His service record has him as b. Kirkmahoe but no trace has been found so far  :-\

I'm not sure if I feel any better! -  but thank you for the `comfort`.

John's  pay was sent to his wife at Berwick, and after she was widowed she and daughter Elizabeth had to receive Poor Rate at Berwick.  But no maiden name anywhere.
I think I have given up on this one.
