You're right Bill about giving things back.
I take advantage of the knowledge on RC at every opportunity.

I never hesitate to return the favours.

e.g. I can call upon folk to do a search on Ancestry for me.  They're paying the subs, I'm not.
It's only fair that I spend some time / pennies searching SP for others.
I might never directly return the favour to the original person, but I reckon it'll be passed along at some point.

:) Thank you to all who have contributed to this discussion, especially Dave who pointed me in this direction. I am pretty sure I have found my ancestor now although I am not sure how to confirm it definitely. The information I have is that David MacDonald was aged about 75 when he died in London in 1835. He was a tailor and left a wife (Mary) and three sons aged between 7 and 15. He was born in Newhall, Scotland. The problem has been the number of Newhalls in Scotland, but with Dave's aid, I think Newhall in Peeblesshire is the one I want. The birth record would make him 76 at the time of his death. I have downloaded Chambers' A History of Peebleshire (1864) from Googlebooks and hope that will help me to understand the time and place.

Melbourne, Australia and hoping to be able to visit Scotland one day

Told you it was a good site Jim. ;D
Hope you join in again, if not on this board, but one of the others.
Lots of folk from Oz on here.

As an aside, my best pal from when I was a kid lives in Melbourne.
Tommy, do you know him?

Sorry. The only Tommy I know is Russian, but I do know another Glaswegian resident in Melbourne – not too bad a bloke for a Campbell   ::)

I laugh Jim.
More than once, when I've mentioned that I come from Glasgow, I've been asked "Do you know .....?"
Depending on my mood, I usually say something along the lines of "Not very well, but I knew his brother"

Considering there's about half a million of us, I probably have upset most!

hi Jim43!
We farm at a place next to Whim, where the principle house is now, and has been for many years a care home for the elderly. We live on a farm in Newlands Parish and my brother-in law lives in Carlops, near the estate of Newhall!
I have the 3 volumes of the History of Peeblesshire, if you need anything looked up.
We have friends from Mornington, Melbourne, who visited lately - small world??
PS Peeblesshire has 2 's' and is also known as Tweeddale - 2 'd's!!!!!

Hi Avril,
I think I'm the guilty one of using one 's' , but doesn't it show how good this site is for 'getting the job done'. Now where else would you find a site like this, Jim43?

Many thanks Avril. I have a one volume history of Peebleshire that I downloaded. Once I get into that and need questions answered. And I do keep missing an s from Pebblesshire: Google corrects me every time.
