Wow, many thanks Jane and Kris, sorry I could not reply earlier but I tucked up nice and warm in bed  :D.  You both have been very helpful, and I find it very interesting.

FYI, the people concerned are directly related to my wife, and my three daughters.

I have a lot more searching to do now, it does not seem to end.

Best wishes,

David

Hi

Having only just chanced upon this thread, I may be too late to offer any useful help but the following may be of interest to someone...  I, too, am a descendant of CHARLES & REBECCA CANNINGS - they were my great x 2 grandparents.

They were married on 13/09/1857 at St Martin's, in Salisbury and seem to have had 11 children in the years that followed :-

 - ELIZABETH ANN CANNINGS - b 1858 Milford
 - JANE CANNINGS - b 1859 Milford (believed to have married ALBERT GRAY, and is listed with him and 3 children in Winterbourne Earls, on the 1901 Census.
 - CHARLES CANNINGS - b 1861 Milford
 - HARRIET CANNINGS (my ancestor) - bap 20/07/1862 Winterbourne Gunner.   Married JOHN NEALE (1851-1906) in 1882, and they raised a family of 12 children.   They lived on a farm in Brambridge, near Winchester at the time of JOHN's death in 1906 and HARRIET continued to live there until she too died in 1925.
 - JAMES CANNINGS - bap 19/06/1864 Winterbourne Earls.   I believe he may have married SARAH WARREN in Mar qtr 1886 in Fareham (Hampshire) with the 1901 Census showing the family (including 5 children) to be living in Longstock, near Andover.
 - GEORGE ALFRED CANNINGS - bap 18/03/1866 Winterbourne Earls, d 1871
 - LOUISA CANNINGS - bap 26/04/1868 Winterbourne Earls
 - CAROLINE ALICE CANNINGS - bap 31/10/1869 Winterbourne Earls
 - EMMA CANNINGS - b 1872 Stockbridge
 - SARAH CANNINGS - b 1874 Stockbridge, d 1885
 - SUSAN CANNINGS - b 1875 Stockbridge

Unfortunately, CHARLES and REBECCA both appear to have died when most of their children were still very young - (REBECCA, d Sep qtr 1878 Stockbridge and CHARLES, d Mar qtr 1880 Stockbridge).  As a result, the 1881 Census lists the 5 youngest children at the "New Orphans' Houses" in Ashley Down, Bristol, Gloucestershire.

REBECCA is thought to have been born in Milford, near Salisbury in about 1837.  Her marriage certificate shows her father to be WILLIAM WILLIS, a labourer.

CHARLES, a carter, was born on 28/12/1834 (bap 18/01/1835 Laverstock) - the son of JAMES CANNINGS & his wife, ANN (nee BEAVIS) - who had been married in Laverstock, on 04/02/1833.

JAMES CANNINGS, in turn, was born on 07/10/1810 in Laverstock (bap 04/11/1810) - the son of THOMAS CANNINGS (1771-1835) & his wife SARAH (nee BROWN), who had married in Great Wishford, Wiltshire on 27/08/1793.
